The research paper determines that the main didactic principle of higher education should be transition from teaching to self-education, which is the highest level of education. It is substantiated that the problem of systematic enrichment and updating of knowledge and skills in order to constantly improve the quality of performing their professional duties is especially relevant for the modern foreign language teacher, whose specific pedagogical activity is impossible without continuous linguistic self-education, which we define as practice-oriented self-education, which involves constant independent maintenance and improvement of the level of proficiency in a foreign language for the purpose of personal growth and professional self-improvement.uk_UA
