Abstract: The article deals with investigating the theoretical aspect of the training of teachers of philology in higher educational institutions of Ukraine in the first half of the twentieth century. It is necessary to highlight and characterize the leading trends that have identified the peculiarities of the organization of the corresponding vocational education. Based on the content analysis of a wide source base (archival materials, regulatory documents, historical and pedagogical literature, publications in periodicals) it was established that at the beginning of the 20th century. the most acute problem was the training of teaching staff to teach the disciplines of the humanitarian cycle, in particular philological. In the process of reforming education at the beginning of the specified historical period, the main attention was focused on the provision of folk schools with a sufficient number of teachers-specialists in linguistics capable of teaching in the Ukrainian language.
