Challenges to higher education during the war in Ukraine

Abstract

UNESCO reports that 91% of the world's student population was affected by school closures in the spring of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the most painful topic was the education of students, not due to Covid-19, but due to the full-scale war in Ukraine. Education is a global common good and the foundation for a just, equitable, inclusive and peaceful society. Russia's invasion has caused worries about the future of Ukrainian students, but this study aims to show that there is a future and that students and teachers should make more efforts to teach students in a new way. The World Bank notes that due to the pandemic and war, educational losses in Ukraine may amount to more than one year. The World Bank recommends focusing on loss assessment, support and tutoring to ensure a minimum knowledge level is achieved. Additionally, the state must regulate the issue of additional remuneration, adaptation of teaching content, and expansion of online content on educational platforms. Understanding the fundamental theories and technologies supporting online learning is essential for educators to create engaging online courses.
