The Role of Universities and Businesses in Achieving Environmental Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

The study explores the critical roles universities and businesses play in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on environmental sustainability. The contribution of universities is highlighted through their roles in education, research, knowledge dissemination, and as socially responsible organizations. A practical example is presented through a course on Communications and Social Responsibility, which integrates corporate social responsibility (CSR) principles into education. A detailed analysis of CSR environmental practices among Polish companies demonstrates a diverse range of activities, such as energy efficiency, sustainable transport, green products, and environmental education. These practices are assessed for their alignment with specific SDGs. The study underscores the growing significance of environmental practices as core business components and their role in shaping ecological consciousness. It concludes by emphasizing the need for further cross-sectoral research to optimize the alignment of business operations with sustainability objectives.
