Abstract: The article presents a retrospective analysis of the activities of the Kharkiv Philological School from the 19th to the first third of the 20th century. Four distinct stages of philological research have been identified: the first stage (syncretic researches) spanning the 1810s–1820s; the second stage (comparative-historical researches) covering the 1830s–1850s; the third stage (psycholinguistic researches or the Potebnian stage) encompassing the 1860s–1890s; and the fourth stage (standardization of the Ukrainian literary language) during the first third of the 20th century.
