| Abstract: | This thesis examines the systemic role of higher education institutions in supporting the transition to a circular economy. It argues that universities function not only as providers of knowledge and professional training but also as capability builders, living laboratories, and platforms for interdisciplinary collaboration. Drawing on examples of circular economy programmes and institutional initiatives in Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, and other European contexts, the paper identifies the main competences required for circular transformation, including systems thinking, life-cycle assessment, circular business modelling, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. The findings demonstrate that effective circular economy education should combine theoretical knowledge, project-based learning, industry cooperation, research, and sustainable campus practices. The paper concludes that strong institutional commitment and the integration of education, research, and operational activities enable universities to contribute to resilient, resource-efficient and regenerative socio-economic systems. |
